Before the start of each school year, all students are required to undergo a physical examination to make sure they are healthy enough to participate in classes. Additional physical examinations will be required if students choose to participate in school-sanctioned athletic programs or sleepaway camps. School physicals are required to be on-file with the nurse’s office within 30 days of the first day of the academic year, and pediatrician’s offices often book up weeks in advance. If you are unable to see your pediatrician for a physical before the start of the year, you can visit AFC Urgent Care Torrington for the necessary examination. AFC Urgent Care works with local schools and school districts in Torrington, Litchfield, Goshen and the surrounding communities to make sure your child gets the care they need by the standards set by the institution.
What to Expect During a School Physical
During your child’s physical, a member of our staff will be able to perform a thorough examination and review of the medical history. If any vaccinations or boosters are needed, they can be administered during your child’s physical. The physician will also be able to diagnose and assess any previously undetected issues that may affect your child’s ability to learn or participate in school activities. The following will be checked during your child’s school physical:
- Height and weight
- Vision and hearing
- Blood pressure and heart rate
- Ear, nose and throat examination
- Scoliosis exam and reflex check
- Check of vaccination history and administer any updates (additional fees may apply)
- Health screening
When Does My Child Need a School or Sports Physical?
Your child will need to have an updated physical on file within 30 days of the first day of school in order to be allowed to attend classes. A specialized sports physical will need to be on file before the first practice of the season. Consult with the school nurse to see if updated physicals are required each season for multi-sport athletes. If your child will be attending an athletic or sleepaway camp, check with their administrative department about when a physical will need to be on file.
